Use common sense with your online banking

26 November 2007

Online security for your home computer is important if you intend to use your home computer for banking online purposes.

As with most things in life, common sense plays a big role in making your online banking experience a time saving, convenient way to manage your finances and pay your bills.

There are several free anti virus software and firewall programs that can be easily downloaded. Your bank may even have special deals in place with internet security specialists such as zone alarm.

Common sense regarding opening email is one small step in the right direction.

Your bank may offer you SMS messaging as a security measure when transactions are made on your account. Be sure to check that the account number you receive is a valid one.

Responding to an unauthorized SMS message can pave the way to unauthorised attacks in the future.

A recent survey conducted at the Queensland University of Technology found that almost one in five people didn't notice an obviously incorrect account that they were replying too while a 'stealth attack' (that only had one digit incorrect), was answered by one in three people.

Common sense can go a long way to avoiding some grief down the road.
